Ebola: Stay in your country, TB Joshua tells victims
Founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations, Pastor Temitope
Joshua, who was recently visited by a team of Nigerian health
authorities over the spread of the deadly Ebola disease, has
directed victims to stay in their countries.
As part of on-going efforts to prevent spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, into the country, a team of Federal and Lagos State Health officials, had visited Joshua, to sensitise members of the congregation about persons from the affected countries in their midst.
Speaking on the deadly disease, Joshua said, “What makes you a good citizen makes you a good Christian. There is a general law in every country that binds against Ebola victims from crossing borders,” Mr. Joshua announced on the church’s official website and Facebook page.
“Obey the law of your land and it shall be well with you. Obey the law of the land by not crossing the borders of your nation with Ebola virus,” he added.
Jide Idris, the Lagos State Commissioner of Health, who led Idris, in his address during interaction at the premises of the Church, said he visited the Church because of its recognition as an international Christian centre whose congregation comprise people from all over the world including the countries of the West African sub-region which have already been affected by the Ebola disease.
He said,“The visit is one of the Government’s strategies of sensitising faith-based organisations on the need to cooperate with the government to prevent the spread of the disease in the country by educating their adherents to escalate health issues to medical experts.
Spread of the virus “Federal and the State governments are working hard on how to prevent a spread of the virus into the country.
The delegation felt that because the church has some people from the West African sub-region as members and because of the influx and population of the congregation there might be need to check and also raise the awareness level on the disease in the church.
“We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease.
Director, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, ön the mission, noted that the visit was also to inform the Synagogue leader of the deadliness of the Ebola Virus and to ensure it does not find its way into the country.
Mr. Joshua, the General Overseer of the Lagos-based church, is controversial for his claims of using divine powers to heal all kinds of ailments, prompting sick people from across Africa and the world to regularly throng his church.
The Nigerian Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Monday said that a medical doctor in Lagos has been infected with the deadly Ebola virus.
The unnamed doctor marks the second case of confirmed Ebola infection in Lagos after Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian, contracted and died of the ailment last month. According to the Prof. Chukwu, 70 other people believed to have come into contact with the Liberian were being monitored.
Of the eight people now in quarantine, three show “symptomatic” signs of the disease, the health minister said.

Village head commits suicide 4 days to daughter’s wedding
ABA—The immediate family and relations of Chief Samuel
Omeonu Ezengwa, a village head in Umunkita, Nenu Autonomous
Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State,
have been thrown into shock after the head of the family and a
village head in the community allegedly committed suicide by
hanging four days to the daughter’s traditional wedding.
A source in the area said the body of the village head was discovered hanging on a tree at about 7am Wednesday by a member of his family who had gone out that morning.
Though it was not known his reasons for committing suicide, Vanguard gathered that the incident has put on hold the deceased daughter’s traditional marriage billed to hold on Sunday, August 3.
A family source said the night before the unfortunate incident, he had had an intensive discussion with the deceased over his daughter’s traditional marriage coming up at the weekend, adding that the deceased never showed any sign of depression which had been attributed as a major cause of the incident.
Sources said on hearing of the incident, the Eastern Ngwa Police Division drafted their men to the area where they had a close session with the immediate family and later left the compound with the man’s body still hanging on the tree.
A villager who spoke on anonymity, said the body of the deceased could only be brought down for burial after some rituals had been performed as demanded by their custom, describing the state of the man’s death as one of the things that “is highly” prohibited by their traditional belief.
Members of the family were said to have been in deep shock over the incident and could not speak publicly on the issue.
Some reports, which were yet to be verified at press time, have it that the victim committed suicide after the community had written the family inviting them to explain what they knew about an alleged financial embezzlement on an electrification project in the community, an amount some said would be too much for them to repay.
Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer failed as he did not pick calls pull through his phone but a reliable police source confirmed the incident.

Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk" He told Reuters His death comes days after a senior doctor at Liberia's largest hospital, Samuel Brisbane, died on Saturday at an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. 3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week.

Dr Idris explained that out of the number, 20 contacts had been physically screened of which 50% are of the type one contact and another 50% had type two contact, adding that the airline manifest has not been provided yet.
"The Airline manifest has not been provided by the airline at the time of this report and therefore, the precise number of passenger contacts is yet to be ascertained, especially as two flights were involved (Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos). There was no report of a medical incident filed." the statement readDr Idris stated categorically that only one case of imported Ebola and one death has been recorded in Lagos. He went further to state
“No Nigerian is infected, but all contacts are being actively followed. We call on all Nigerians to be calm and not panic and I do hereby assure them that both the state and Federal governments are up in arms to ensure that the virus did not escape and that no Nigeria is infected with this virus,” he stressed. He said part of the measures taken after the death of the Liberian was the demobilization of the private hospital where he was admitted and elimination of primary source of infection and that the decontamination process in all affected areas has commenced.

We have insiders in commercial banks' suspected fraudsters confess
The Lagos State Police Command has
arrested three suspected fraudsters identified as Kola Osho, Oyedepo
Adesola and Kola Ademola, who allegedly specialize in
withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts using dud cheques.
According to Punch,
the police said the suspects
usually obtained the cheques from people who are experts
in stealing cheque books from unsuspecting people, then they will
present the cheques to their insider in the bank, who will dubiously
verify the account holder and the signature before the money
could be paid out. Continue...
The men were arrested at the
Pipeline area of Abule-Egba, a suburb in Lagos following a tip off.
While Oyedepo Adesola and Kola Ademola were arrested on Wednesday, July
23, Kola Osho was
arrested the following day July 24th. They were found with two dud
cheques belonging to a commercial bank, and
some forged letter-head documents bearing ‘Ministry of Finance &
Economic Development'. "I was formerly doing supplying and clearing business. I wanted to use the documents the police found on me to process a visa to the United Kingdom. I got the forged documents from the Internet. Ademola gave the cheques to me and I returned them because I could not cash them. He is like a son to me as I am his father’s friend. So, I sent back all the businesses he brought, because I did not want any trouble. I used to have insiders in the banks, but I have cut off from them all. I knew I cheated when I got the forged documents to process my visa, but I did not have any option. It also did not work out.” he saidAnother suspect, Kola Ademola, 33, who hails from Ikire, Osun State claims to be a graduate of Business Administration and runs an Educational center. He said he got the cheque books from a certain Samson he met at Obalende in Lagos and that they were yet to make any money from the cheque books, a situation he described as unfortunate.
“I am an Educational Consultant. That is what I do for a living. I also enroll pupils for final-year examination. Last year, I met one boy called Samson who stayed in Obalende, and he was the one who got the cheques and brought them to me. I don’t know how he got them, but they were original cheques. We delivered these to the banks insiders who worked on them, and brought out the cash. But because of the present cashless policy, we can only withdraw less than N100,000 which would not require the confirmation from the signatories. This is the third cheque I would be bringing to Mr. Osho, but he said he does not have any insider in that particular bank. On the first cheque, he said the account did not contain much money. The second cheque too was not successful. So, we have not made any money from these deals. It is just unfortunate.” he said
The
last suspect, Oyedepo Adesola, aged 36, on the other hand claims to be
innocent and was only on a visit to Mr Osho's office when the police
arrested him.
“I hold a Higher National Diploma from a polytechnic in Oyo State. I studied Accounting and finished in 2007. I do not know what the police are talking about. I simply came to Osho to transact a business, and they got me arrested. I am innocent.” he saidSource: Punch

NPA deceiving Nigerians, says Lagos govt
Lagos State Government yesterday, described as act of
deception and falsehood the response of the management of
Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, to recent comments by Governor
Babatunde Fashola on the persistent gridlock on the Oshodi-
Apapa Expressway, which has continued to cripple vehicular
movement and business activities in Apapa and its environs.
NPA, in a statement by its Head of Public Affairs department, Mr. Musa Illya, had identified Lagos State Government as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the port concessions in terms of the revenue collected from importers as wharf landing fees, and other businesses generated by the port activities among others.
Fashola, about three weeks ago visited Apapa and lampooned the management of NPA over its inefficiency in monitoring the handling of cargo operations at various terminals as well as poor implementation of concession policy of the ports.
But the state government through the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, urged members of the public to disregard the claim by the NPA spokesman, saying he was either selling lies or ignorant on the update of Apapa issues.
He said “Is either the proponent is under illusion to sell lies to the people or he is unaware of the issues surrounding Apapa regeneration plans between the Federal Government and the state government.
We met with Federal Government, FG, in 2011, 2012, with Minister of Works, where an agreement was reached. The state government has implemented over 75 percent of the deal while the FG has contributed nothing.”
”He can go and verify. There has been no commitment from the FG. Only last Thursday, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Works met again to review the situation and they agreed to mobilise a contractor to fix the failed portions of the road and up till now, nothing has been done on it.”
