Bitter Kola is not a cure for Ebola

Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services, Tolbert Nyenswah, has disputed media reports that the nut, ‘Garcinia Kola’, commonly known as bitter kola is a cure for Ebola. He said to date no vaccine or cure has been found for Ebola. A local daily reported on Tuesday that the nut had stopped the Ebola virus in test tubes in initial laboratory experiments, experts, including a Nigerian pharmacologist, revealed. According to the Liberia News Agency, Assistant Minister Nyenswah made the bitter kola-Ebola cure clarification at the regular Thursday Ministry of Information press briefing held at the Ministry in Monrovia. Meanwhile, Minister Nyenswah is calling on the public to report anyone or group of people administering vaccines supposedly for the prevention of Ebola or any form of drug or tablets, herbs or injections in the communities to the nearest police station. He said the Health Ministry is also calling on people not to listen to any information from unknown individuals or groups, except that provided by the Ministry of Health and partners. According to Mr. Nyensuah, anyone caught administering fake vaccine or tablets and even spreading wrong information on the Ebola disease would face prosecution. In a related development, the Assistant Health Minister has disclosed that 11 persons have survived the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia and that four additional counties have been re-categorized as response counties, bringing the total number of counties affected by theEbola virus in Liberia to seven. The counties are Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Bong, Lofa, and Nimba. Assistant Minister Nyenswah said as from July 16, 179 Ebola cases have been reported with 67 confirmed, while at least 105 deaths have been recorded with 48 confirmed Ebola deaths since the second wave of the Ebola virus outbreak in Liberia from May 29 to July 16, 2014.

Doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients dies from the virus

The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died. Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died today July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week.

He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.

In an interview last month, the 39yr old doctor had expressed fears for his life because of his constant contact with Ebola patients.

"I am afraid for my life. Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by the disease.

Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk" He told Reuters His death comes days after a senior doctor at Liberia's largest hospital, Samuel Brisbane, died on Saturday at an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. 3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week.

Several other medics have been infected.

Nigerian ambassador, 3 ECOWAS staff, 55 others had contact with Lagos Ebola victim

59 people including the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Obi Nnadozie are said to have had direct and indirect contact with the late Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, who died on Friday July 25th from the Ebola Virus in Lagos.

At a J
oint Ministerial Press briefing of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and Federal Ministry of Health on development concerning the disease yesterday July 28th, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide Idris said out of the 59 people who had contact with the late Patrick Sawyer, 44 were hospital contacts (38 healthcare workers & 6 laboratory staff) and 15 Airport contacts comprising 3 ECOWAS staff-driver, Liaison, and Protocol officers, Nigerian Ambassador to Monrovia, two nursing staff and five Airport passenger handlers. Continue...

Dr Idris explained that out of the number, 20 contacts had been physically screened of which 50% are of the type one contact and another 50% had type two contact, adding that the airline manifest has not been provided yet.
"The Airline manifest has not been provided by the airline at the time of this report and therefore, the precise number of passenger contacts is yet to be ascertained, especially as two flights were involved (Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos). There was no report of a medical incident filed." the statement read
Dr Idris stated categorically that only one case of imported Ebola and one death has been recorded in Lagos. He went further to state
“No Nigerian is infected, but all contacts are being actively followed.  We call on all Nigerians to be calm and not panic and I do hereby assure them that both the state and Federal governments are up in arms to ensure that the virus did not escape and that no Nigeria is infected with this virus,” he stressed.
He said part of the measures taken after the death of the Liberian was the demobilization of the private hospital where he was admitted and elimination of primary source of infection and that the decontamination process in all affected areas has commenced.

He added that the corpse of the victim has since been cremated, and the ash is awaiting further directives from the Liberian Embassy.
"Adhering strictly to WHO guidelines, the body of the deceased patient was decontaminated using 10% sodium hypochlorite and cremated, with the permission of the government of Liberia. A cremation urn has been prepared for dispatch to the family. The vehicle that conveyed the remains was also fully decontaminated," he added.

We have insiders in commercial banks' suspected fraudsters confess

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspected fraudsters identified as Kola Osho, Oyedepo Adesola and Kola Ademola, who allegedly specialize in withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts using dud cheques.

According to Punch, the police said the suspects usually obtained the cheques from people who are experts in stealing cheque books from unsuspecting people, then they will present the cheques to their insider in the bank, who will dubiously verify the account holder and the signature before the money could be paid out. Continue...
The men were arrested at the Pipeline area of Abule-Egba, a suburb in Lagos following a tip off. While Oyedepo Adesola and Kola Ademola were arrested on Wednesday, July 23,  Kola Osho was arrested the following day July 24th. They were found with two dud cheques belonging to a commercial bank, and some forged letter-head documents bearing ‘Ministry of Finance & Economic Development'.
In his confessional statement, 57 year old Osho who hails from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said his desire to pursue a better life abroad made him get involved in the criminal act of bank fraud.
"I was formerly doing supplying and clearing business. I wanted to use the documents the police found on me to process a visa to the United Kingdom. I got the forged documents from the Internet. Ademola gave the cheques to me and I returned them because I could not cash them. He is like a son to me as I am his father’s friend. So, I sent back all the businesses he brought, because I did not want any trouble. I used to have insiders in the banks, but I have cut off from them all. I knew I cheated when I got the forged documents to process my visa, but I did not have any option. It also did not work out.” he said
Another suspect, Kola Ademola, 33, who hails from Ikire, Osun State claims to be a graduate of Business Administration and runs an Educational center. He said he got the cheque books from a certain Samson he met at Obalende in Lagos and that they were yet to make any money from the cheque books, a situation he described as unfortunate.
“I am an Educational Consultant. That is what I do for a living. I also enroll pupils for final-year examination. Last year, I met one boy called Samson who stayed in Obalende, and he was the one who got the cheques and brought them to me. I don’t know how he got them, but they were original cheques. We delivered these to the banks insiders who worked on them, and brought out the cash. But because of the present cashless policy, we can only withdraw less than N100,000 which would not require the confirmation from the signatories. This is the third cheque I would be bringing to Mr. Osho, but he said he does not have any insider in that particular bank. On the first cheque, he said the account did not contain much money. The second cheque too was not successful. So, we have not made any money from these deals. It is just unfortunate.” he said
The last suspect, Oyedepo Adesola, aged 36, on the other hand claims to be innocent and was only on a visit to Mr Osho's office when the police arrested him.
“I hold a Higher National Diploma from a polytechnic in Oyo State. I studied Accounting and finished in 2007. I do not know what the police are talking about. I simply came to Osho to transact a business, and they got me arrested. I am innocent.” he said

Osun campaign: Lagbaja rejects Iyiola Omisore’s offer, blasts him..

Muiscian Lagbaja over the weekend reportedly turned down an offer by the Iyiola Omisore Campaign Organisation to perform at the grand finale rally & reception for Pres. Jonathan scheduled to hold in Osogbo, Osun State, next week.

According to The Nation, Lagbaja was approached to entertain supporters of Omisore, the candidate of PDP in the up-coming governorship election in Osun State, but he declined the offer, saying;

"Though the court of the land discharged and acquitted you (Omisore) in the murder case against the former Minister of Justice in Nigeria, the late Cicero of Esa-Oke & foremost nationalist, Chief Bola Ige, I have deep-rooted innermost conviction that you are culpable in the death of my mentor and benefactor.

If you offer me all the allocation of Osun State during your four-year-tenure peradventure you win (which I seriously doubt), I will not perform for Iyiola Omisore governorship election.”

TECH: How To Minimze Data Consumption on Your Android Phone Using DroidWall

Since the usage of android smartphones began to go on the increase in this part of the world due to cheap android phones pushed into the mobile market, one question I regularly get in forms of mails and comments on this blog is “ How To Minimize the data bundle consumption rate of android phones “.

There are a whole bunch of reasons why Android devices tend to consume a lot of data, and as a result incure you more cost for your data charges than any other OS which might range from getting updates automatically over the air (OTA), remember that most free apps you make use of on your android phones run ads as a means of compensation or would I rather say the developers little way of sustaining the freebie project.

So this can really help push up your data usage to your detriment.

Enough of those reasons, the reason you are on this page is to put an end to the rate at which your data is been consumed on your android phone, and that’s exactly what I’ll be explaining.

Have you wondered if there is a way to blacklist apps you don’t wish to allow use your data subscription or an app that can help you only white- list your desired apps you want to access your data resources? Well, that’s what Driodwall does.

This app helps you set up a white-list of apps you wish to allow access your data subscription simply by ticking some check-boxes next to your desired app in the user interface of Droidwall when launched.

After ticking the selected Apps, click on the App options, Save Rule and then Enable the FireWall .

DroidWall is a simple to use Android App that can help you handle and manage your rate of data consumption on any android device.

Note: You must have to Root Your Android Device before using this App as it requires root access before it can work.

That’s how easy you can minimize your data usage on your android smartphones, devices and tablets .

Feel free to contribute to this guide using the comment box, tell us other ways you manage your data subscriptions on your Android Phones.

Don’t negotiate for Chibok girls, Muslims tell Sultan

Don’t negotiate for Chibok girls, Muslims tell Sultan

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar III

The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has warned the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, against holding talks with the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, until he receives an official approval from the Federal Government.

The apex body of Muslims in the country fears that the Sultan might be blackmailed by the government if he goes ahead to negotiate with the terrorist group, especially on the over 200 pupils of Government Girls’ Secondary School abducted by the sect on April 14, without an official consent.

The council warned that the Islamic leader should not be hoodwinked into making such moves by those calling for his intervention in the insurgency by the sect.

Some Islamic elite, under the aegis of Concerned Muslim Professionals, had written to the Sultan earlier in July, asking him to lead the dialogue with the Boko Haram sect.

The group told the monarch, who is the President-General of the NSCIA, to use his position and engage members of the sect in dialogue that would make them stop their campaign of killings.

Similarly, a human rights activist based in the North and President, Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Shehu Sani, had earlier in May asked the Sultan to spearhead the moves to secure the release of the abducted pupils from the group’s captivity.

Sani, in a letter to the religious leader, had said, “You (Sultan) have a moral duty and a spiritual responsibility to be visibly and actively involved in seeking the resolution of this impasse happening within areas you have religious influence.”

However, the Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, while speaking to SUNDAY PUNCH on Thursday, warned that the President-General of the council should not be hoodwinked into taking up the task of negotiating with the terrorists.

He said, “The Muslim community had always been taking action; it had always been appealing to the people (Boko Haram) but Muslim leaders are also cautious because in your process to go out to look for these people; if in the process you’re caught talking with them, the government can even turn against you and say you’re part of part of Boko Haram.

“No matter the level of the Muslim leader, he has to think twice before he begins to communicate with these people (sect) because the same government that you want to work for can turn against you and accuse you of complicity; and you will be on your own.

“They (government) have enough machinery to present you as a devil such that members of your family will believe that you’re a devil.”

When asked if such could be done to the Sultan, the professor insisted that the Islamic leader could be implicated without the backing of the government, especially at a time when “many of us are being unduly monitored.”

He added, “I am not the Sultan but fortunately the Sultan has dual status; traditionally, he is the Sultan of Sokoto; religiously, he is the leader of the Muslim community. I relate with him as far as his mandate as the leader of the Muslim community is concerned.

“In that capacity, I will not advise him to hold any unilateral action with the sect without having the full confidence of the government of the day. If anybody makes such calls, somebody like the Sultan should think twice before venturing into searching for people you do not know.”

Oloyede asked why the Federal Government kept the findings by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, which was chaired by the Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki.

“I believe that by now, as Muslims leaders, we should have access to the findings; we don’t. We are just working in darkness. By now, even if the report had not been released, we should have had access to it. Then, we will be able to have some clues to what is happening,” the NSCIA scribe stated.

Also, an Islamic pressure group, Muslims Rights Concern, said it was the responsibility of the Federal Government, and not the Sultan, to seek an end to the insurgency by the group.

The Founder, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, told SUNDAY PUNCH in an interview on Friday that the Sultan had spoken out against the activities of the sect on several occasions, “what else do they want him to do?”

He said, “I stand by the decision of the Supreme Council; it is a very correct position. The Sultan cannot negotiate, particularly without the Federal Government’s green light. We don’t support the idea of the Sultan negotiating because he would be seen as somebody who has vested interests. Why can’t the Federal Government take that up?”

The Professor of Islamic Eschatology stated that there was no reason for the Muslim community to rise up to the challenge separately, as it would be “tantamount to sedition, separatism and rising when the Federal Government should rise.”

Efforts to get the Presidency for comments on Friday and Saturday proved abortive. Calls made to the mobile phones of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, respectively, were not picked.

Also, they did not reply to text messages sent to them.

In the letter to the Sultan, the President, Concerned Muslim Professionals, Alhaji Mohammed Saidu, said, “A failure on the part of the Muslim leadership (under His Eminence the Sultan) to discharge these responsibilities/actions to the later will render it of questionable ability, doubtful recognition, decimal loyalty or an outright dismissal as a mere smoke-screen. As obedient and loyalists to His Eminence the Sultan, our hearts bleed on these realities.”

Sani, in an exclusive interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, had stated that the sect would prefer Islamic clerics as its negotiators.

He said, “The group (Boko Haram) is mostly comfortable with Islamic clerics. The insurgents are more comfortable with people that are considered neutralists. .

“For the purpose of negotiation, if the government is setting up a team, I strongly advise that the team should be made up of Islamic clerics, who are going to reach out to them to seek the release of the girls.”

Just as the Islamic bodies have requested, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan must approve his planned move to secure the release of the Chibok schoolgirls.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV on May 31, 2014, the ex-President had said while he had not been officially mandated to lead the mediation, his next step was to get an approval from the government. He insisted that the President must know about his moves.

Again on June 12, 2014, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Obasanjo had expressed his regret that the Federal Government had not yet given him the green light to reach to the insurgents for the release of the girls.

The Federal Government had, however, insisted that Obasanjo had access to President Jonathan, if he truly wanted to make inputs. Sources at the Presidency had also expressed doubts over Obasanjo’s sincerity with his plan.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s Eid-el-fitri Message To Nigerians

Dear compatriots,

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters on the auspicious occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Fitri celebrations . I congratulate all of our countrymen and women who have successfully undertaken the purifying Ramadan fast.

As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, it is my hope and prayer that Ramadan’s spiritual lessons and the Holy Prophet’s teachings of piety, love, justice, fairness, equity, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty and dedication to duty will remain with us all for the benefit and greater glory of our dear nation .May the lessons and blessings of the Holy Month also permeate into us all, and positively influence our attitudes towards our fellow countrymen and women, irrespective of their religion or places of origin; and promote greater commitment to the peace, unity and stability of the nation.

Although the observance of the Holy Month was sadly tainted in parts of the country with the continuing atrocities of extremists and terrorists in our midst, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to remain strong and resolute in defence of freedom, unity, law and order, peace, security and progress of the nation.

I feel the pains and anguish of all our compatriots who have experienced the harrowing impact of terrorism unleashed on them by brainwashed and misguided agents of evil and disunity, but we must never throw up our hands in helplessness and despair as the terrorists and purveyors of anarchy want.

Going forward, let us all remain unwaveringly committed to showing solidarity with our Armed Forces and security agencies and giving them the full support they require to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion.

I assure all Nigerians, once again, that we are totally committed to winning that war, putting the scourge of terrorism and insecurity rapidly behind us and giving the fullest possible attention to the urgent task of improving the living conditions of our people in all parts of the country.

We cannot and will not be deterred from our goal of positively transforming our nation into a strong, united, progressive, stable, secure and prosperous nation in which all citizens will live in peace in spite of our immense diversities.

May Almighty Allah continue to bless our nation and all who have successfully undertaken this year’s Ramadan Fast.

I wish you all happy and peaceful Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

Federal Republic of Nigeria

Ebola virus [you need to read]

Once again, #Ebola is in the news! Ebola is an illness that cause death in up to 9 out of every 10 persons infected. It is caused by a tiny particle called a virus. Some viruses cause mild illnesses (like common cold). Others like Ebola virus cause very severe illness and quite often, death. Ebola was first described in 1976 in Yambuku in the Ebola river basin of the then Zaire. Since then, there have been several outbreaks of the disease in West, Central and East Africa. Ebola is believed to have an animal reservoir, most likely bats but this has not been confirmed by research. Human beings and apes get infected by direct contact with infected tissue or body fluids. Ebola can be sexually transmitted through semen. Hunting for or eating "bush meat" may contribute to outbreaks of Ebola. Poor health facilities and burial rituals (for dead victims) lead to infections of medical workers and caregivers. Travel also helps spread the illness from country to country. About three days after exposure to infected material, symptoms of fever, severe headache, sore throat and body pains may appear. This may be mistaken for malaria or other common fevers. After these, a rash may appear in fair people. The eyes may become very bloodshot. Eventually, most organ systems in the body begin to fail and patients may be noticed to bleed excessively from different places. Most patients (40 - 90%) do not survive beyond this stage. Survivors begin to show a gradual recovery after 2 weeks of infection. Special tests are required to confirm Ebola. These tests are not readily available in most areas affected by these disease. Hence, Ebola outbreaks are usually full-blown before they are recognized. There is no specific treatment or cure for #Ebola. No preventive vaccine is currently available. Many drugs have been tried but with disappointing results.

Politicians buy human parts from me, says suspect (photo)

The Kwara state Police command yesterday July 23rd paraded two men who they said are involved in trading of human parts.

The men whose names were given as Amos Kareem and Abubakar Ladan were arrested with human head, leg and hand in Tabira village, Okuta in Baruten LGA of the state, according to a report by Vanguard.

When interviewed, one of the suspects, Abubakar Ladan said Amos Kareem promised to give him a motorcycle if he could find him human head, hand and leg. His desire to own a motorcycle made him go to a cemetery where he exhumed bodies and cut off their heads, hands and legs (pictured above).

When asked what he wanted to do with the human parts, Amos Kareem said he sold them to politicians. He however refused to disclose the identities of the politicians.

The police also paraded a man said to be an accomplice, having accommodated the suspects in Tabira village, though the man denied knowledge of the business Kareem and Ladan were involved in.

NPA deceiving Nigerians, says Lagos govt

Lagos State Government yesterday, described as act of deception and falsehood the response of the management of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, to recent comments by Governor Babatunde Fashola on the persistent gridlock on the Oshodi- Apapa Expressway, which has continued to cripple vehicular movement and business activities in Apapa and its environs.

NPA, in a statement by its Head of Public Affairs department, Mr. Musa Illya, had identified Lagos State Government as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the port concessions in terms of the revenue collected from importers as wharf landing fees, and other businesses generated by the port activities among others.

Fashola, about three weeks ago visited Apapa and lampooned the management of NPA over its inefficiency in monitoring the handling of cargo operations at various terminals as well as poor implementation of concession policy of the ports.

But the state government through the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, urged members of the public to disregard the claim by the NPA spokesman, saying he was either selling lies or ignorant on the update of Apapa issues.

He said “Is either the proponent is under illusion to sell lies to the people or he is unaware of the issues surrounding Apapa regeneration plans between the Federal Government and the state government.

We met with Federal Government, FG, in 2011, 2012, with Minister of Works, where an agreement was reached. The state government has implemented over 75 percent of the deal while the FG has contributed nothing.”

”He can go and verify. There has been no commitment from the FG. Only last Thursday, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Works met again to review the situation and they agreed to mobilise a contractor to fix the failed portions of the road and up till now, nothing has been done on it.”

ABEOKUTA— The Ogun State Police Command yesterday, said it had arrested a 47-year-old farmer, Gbenga Ogunfolabo, for stabbing his wife, Bosede Ogunfolabo, 45, to death with broken bottle during a fisticuff.

Fayose accuses Fayemi of employing 4,000 new workers

Ado Ekiti—EKITI State Governor-elect, Mr. Ayo Fayose, yesterday, claimed the outgoing administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi had since the June 21‘ gubernatorial election in the state, employed no fewer than 4,000 workers into the state civil service and the state university. Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti (l) and Governor-Elect, Mr Ayo Fayose, during Fayose’s visit to the Governor in Ado-Ekiti

The governor-elect, who featured on a local radio station in Ado- Ekiti, described such employments as illegal, warning civil servants against being used for illegalities that would attract severe sanction.

But in a swift reaction, governor Kayode Fayemi-led Administration, dismissed the claims, saying there was no iota of truth that the outgoing government recruited about 4,000 workers.

Chairman of the Ekiti State Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Suleimon Afolabi Ogunlayi, while reacting to the allegation, said “I want to say that the Civil Service Commission under my leadership is not aware of, is not a party to and is not making any plans and has not requested for or obtained any approval for the appointment of 3,000 or 6,000 applicants as being peddled.

”However, why we are not unmindful of the fact that the present administration is in transit, the commission still has the powers to carry out the mandates in the areas of appointment, promotion, discipline and transfer of service.”

According to him, the 334 persons that were employed into the service was before the June 21 election and they passed through the rigour of examinations and oral interviews, contrary to insinuations that the exercise was politicized, contending that the state would have loved to do more, but for dwindling federal allocation to the state.

But, Fayose claimed over 3,000 persons had been illegally employed into the state civil service and another 1,000 at Ekiti State University after the election, warning civil servants against being used for illegal acts, declaring that anybody found culpable would be dealt with severely.

While speaking on the planned creation of new Local Government Development Areas, LGDAs, he said “I see such an action in the twilight of his administration as setting landmines for the incoming government.

”This is apart from the fact that the matter is in court and the order given by the court has not been vacated. If the people of the state want him to continue with his policies, they would have voted him.

The funds coming to the state come in the name of specific local governments.”

US Embassy Training Nigeria Electoral Officials

FILE- Election posters along a road on the last day of voter registration exercises in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, Feb. 5, 2011.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria is organizing a series of workshops to train public affairs officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be better able to interact with stakeholders in the run up to next year’s general election, according to Nick Dazang, the electoral body’s national Deputy Director for Public Affairs.

Dazang says INEC officers who have participated in the program are pleased with the intensity and knowledge they acquired during the training, which he says will improve their education and sensitization duties with the over 72 million registered voters in next year’s vote.

“It will be of tremendous benefit to the commission in the sense that the public affairs officers will be in the position to do their jobs more confidently and more competently than they used to do before,” said Dazang.

Dazang says the training will help INEC engage with civil society organizations, political parties, the media, prospective voters as well as the entire population about efforts to organize credible elections.

He says the second part of the training of INEC’s public affairs officers in the country’s northern region will end on Friday.

Critics say INEC has often failed to organize credible elections by rigging the vote in favor of some political parties. But Dazang disagreed, saying the electoral body has been impartial in administering elections in the country. He added that INEC has implemented new measures, backed by political parties, to improve the way the group administers elections.

“Elections generally are a matter of perceptions. The fact that the EMB [Elections Management Body] has to be seen to be up and doing and conduct elections that are credible, that are fair and transparent, Nigerians also need and members of the international community also need to see these elections truly transparent,” said Dazang.

“It is the public affairs that can help the EMB to project INEC as an organization that is determined and irrevocably resolved to conducting elections that are free and fair,” said Dazang.

Analysts say education campaigns previously conducted by the electoral commission to sensitize Nigerians ahead of elections have been inadequate. Dazang said the U.S. Embassy training will help INEC to better educate Nigerians in the run up to next year’s elections.

“We expect that Nigerian voters will be better educated and that our public affairs officers will devise strategies other than the orthodox once that we used to do to reach out to the millions of voters that are going to cast their vote,” said Dazang.

“We expect that the public affairs officers will be in a better position to effectively communicate the commission’s messages, and our polices to the many stakeholders of INEC.”
